Stained Glass History

The Blenko Glass Company was the first United States company to produce mouth-blown sheet glass, using what is called the "muff" process. The process used dates back to the creation of Blenko Glass Company in the nineteenth century. The term "antique" refers to the mouth-blown glass process used to make our sheet glass. At Blenko, that process has not changed in over 100 years. The first step involves mouth-blowing a cylinder of molten glass into a cast iron or hand carved fruitwood mold. The cylinder is then annealed and the ends are removed. It is then reheated just to the point that it becomes soft and flexible and is then flattened into a sheet. After a second annealing period the sheet is ready for use in a stained glass window.

Blenko 'Antique Sheet Glass'

  Antique Sheet Glass
Blenko produces two varieties of Antique Sheet Glass. These varieties include wood mold or smooth texture, and iron mold or mottled texture.

Iron mold texture is available in both colored and clear. Our clear, smooth glass, is also considered to be the original "Restoration Glass." It is used in the repair and replacement of window glass in many early buildings and homes.

Sample sets are available. Please contact us for availability and pricing.

Blenko 'Dalle De Verre' Hand Cast Blocks

  Dalle De Verre (Slab Glass)

Blenko Glass Company began producing Dalle de Verre in the late 1950's when the process was brought to us from France, making Blenko the first United States company to produce dalles. Blenko dalles are hand cast from soda-lime-silica glass and come in a wide variety of repeatable colors. Our hand cast method has not changed since we began making dalles.

Dalle de Verre is relatively easy to design and construct, and is an excellent alternative to traditional sheet glass installations. Sample sets are available. Please contact us for availability and pricing.

Blenko 'Hand Spun Rondels'

and Bullseye Panes

  Hand Spun Rondels
Blenko has been producing hand spun rondels for over 100 years using a process that dates back to Medieval times. Our rondels range in size from 3" to 14" and can be custom cut into "bull's eye panes" for restoration purposes. Please contact us for availability and pricing.
